By Kathy Rothaar
More than thirty years ago I left this area in search of my dreams. I set off to prove to myself that life was better “on the other side of the fence.” I was convinced that this small town couldn’t hold my dreams nor could they be realized here. Now, thirty years later my family and I make the annual pilgrimage from New York to Side Lake every year and I have come to dream new dreams.
I dream of a sunset on the lake shoreline that is beyond description. I dream of the cry of the loon as she calls to her young. I dream of watching a bald eagle circle the lake and swoop down into the water to catch a fish; and I catch my breath as she majestically glides away. I dream of a place where complete strangers wave to me as I walk along the lake roads. I dream of parades that both touch my heart and my funny bone, giving me a sense of pride and pleasure. I dream of campfires and smores and simple pleasures with my children laughing and enjoying a memory that will forever be embedded in my mind. I dream of lazy summer days at the beach with old and new friends, swimming, boating and enjoying all of God’s creation.
I left in search of my dreams, only to find out that my reality was better than any dream. I have discovered that Side Lake, Minnesota is a magical place; a place where reality is a dream come true. |
